whats are the advantage and disadvantage of our new online "surveillance sociery"? in other words , are we moving towards a digital dystopid or upopia?
On one hand Surveillance society has enabled us to know about any person we want to know, by just typing his/her name and address etc on search engine, checking their blogs, profiles, their social media contacts , their likes and comments made by them etc., and on other hand , it has endangered our privacy, has put us in threat of loss of our data, threat of getting our profiles hacked or misuse of our social media photos. Though this constant monitoring of data brings us some safety as if any dangerous data is encountered such as a crime of violence it can be identified and deal with, thus online surveillance help prevent crime. Also despite the fact that our information online is accessible, it does not mean that it will be used in malicious ways. Companies use our information to know our lifestyle, our needs, our shopping habits etc to bring us more buying satisfaction, but sometimes, constant display of advertisements when we are working on our systems being a lot of irritation and at times we get very lured and buy things we don’t need. Our information online also used in filtering systems that ensure that we are not criminally active.
A BBC radio 5 live investigation revealed that there are sites where hackers exchange videos and pictures of people on their webcams unknown to owners of webcams. There has been news of stealth of celebrity private pictures from i cloud hacking. Indeed, we seem to be moving towards a digital dystopia.
