Public health surveillance(PHS) is the systematic oganised ongoing collection,analysis and interpretation of data on specific health events for planning , implementation and evaluation of public health programmes with the timely dissemination of these data to those responsible for prevention and control.

it includes public, health care providers, and health agencies. public health surveillance provides and interprets data to facilitate the prevention and control of disease.

PHS detect changes in health practices and services. individual persons, health care providers, enviornmental conditions are the sources for gathering data. enviornmental monitoring, surveys, notifications, registriesm are the methods used to collect health related data.
