Millions of people are affected by both natural and man-made
disasters. They involve explosions, earthquakes, floods,
hurricanes, tornados, or fires. Disasters can pose threat to life
or long term impacting injuries. There is also a threat to the
property, possessions and community. There are various types of
natural hazards taking place. They include:-
- Geological hazards- They occur because of
volcanic activity. These events include earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and landslides.
- Meteorological hazards - They occur as a
result of processes in the atmosphere. Meteorological hazards
include extreme temperatures, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, and
severe storms.
- Hydrological hazards are hazards involving
water processes. Examples include floods, droughts, and
tsunamis.
- Biological hazards occur due to the biological
processes of the earth and primarily involve the spread of diseases
and pests. Epidemics, pandemics, and insect swarms all fall into
the biological hazards category.
Owing to different types of hazards, there are various types of
effects due to the occuring of these hazards. These effects are
chronological. They happen one after the other. They are:-
- Primary Effects:- These are the direct impacts of the disaster
occuring immediately after the disaster has happened. They include
damage of land and property. Broken trees, collapsed builldings,
damaged electric lines, water lines etc. The another important
primary effect of the disaster is that it can surge storms and
tornadoes.
- Secondary effects:- These are the effects of the primary
effects. They can be called as intermediate term effects of the
disaster. Due to the damage to the land and property, humans
routine life is disturbed. There are power cuts, forest fires, crop
damage.
- Tertiary effects:- These are the long term effects of both
primary and secondary effects of the disaster. These include crop
failure, loss of crop yield, migration of community, changes in the
flow of river, soil damage, waterlogging, loss of heavy funds to
recover the impacted areas, decrease of production capacity of
equipments etc.
