As we all know, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA was introduced in President Obama's Administration in the year 2012, 15 August. It is a United States immigration policy which helps in providing administrative relief from deportation and protects the eligible immigrant youth who came to US from deportation when they were children( before 16th birthday) . The documents required to apply for this program includes Birth Certificate, Passport, Consular I.D./National I.D./Cédula, California ID and/or School IDs. The program expires after two years which is subjected to renewal.
The Mexican Americans also known as Chicano has a population of around 37 million, which comprises of 11.3% of the United States' population. If DACA program ends, it will adversely affect the population of Chicano.
Donald Trump wants Congress to create a replacement program to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.
On January 26, 2018, Trump released a proposed immigration plan. which would offer a 12-year path to citizenship for 1.8 million immigrants who arrived in the United States illegally as children. It would replace President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Because of the parameters of who is allowed into the program, i.e, members of the program are often in their early stages of their careers. DACA helped in increasing both employment and income among those eligible for the program. DACA provides not only the assurance that their lives won’t be upended, but also financial stability. Eliminating the program would almost certainly lead to unemployement, lost jobs and no income for members and their families.
Besides, ending DACA will also have a negative impact on the health of the families and relatives with stress and high level of anxiety. The health of the communities will also have an adverse impact as the citizens who are eligible for the program also tends to be clustered geographically and are vulnerable to poverty, violence, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety leading to unstable relationships, workplace hazards, and discrimination. The provisional relief program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is shown to have improved the physical and mental health of its recipients despite its temporary nature. Thus, by ending the DACA program, the population of Chicano will have a detrimental effect on their overall physical and mental well-being.
Millions of people will be directly impacted by the end of Obama-era program. It will also inflict serious harm on the companies, workers and employees and revenue as a whole. Ending DACA will reduce economic growth by $280 billion, leading to the declinig of critical public programs, like Social Security and Medicaid. It will affect tens of thousands of the children and relatives, as well as their local economies.
Millions of people who lived in the United States for more than a decade and have been fully interconnected and integrated into American life, could face the prospect of deportation. That would mean leaving behind their jobs, community and educational opportunities in the United States to start over in an unfamiliar country.
Regardless of some potential fixes in the program, Donald Trump’s decision to end the DACA program has already disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, who have spent the last two years unsure of what the future holds.
