SUBJECT: CONTROL SYSTEM DESIGN (Simulink Model)

• What does the ‘Bias’ block do to the input sine wave? Describe it.

• What is a ‘Subsystem’ and why is it useful when developing a model?

• What does the ‘Gain’ block do? What does a gain value of 255/5 mean?

• What does the '1023' value do in the Arduino I/O subsystem?

• What does the gain value of ‘5/1023’? What is its relationship to an 8-bit digital wave?

Expert Solution

  • Bias block adds an offset (difference between two inputs) to the input sine wave. It can be described as

Y = X+bias, where X is the input signal or sine wave in this case and Y is the obtained output after adding offset

  • A subsystem is a set of blocks that can be grouped into a single Subsystem block. As a model increases in size and complexity, you can simplify it by grouping blocks into subsystems. It is very useful in developing models because it keeps functionally related blocks together and helps reduce the number of blocks displayed in your model window.
  • The Gain block multiplies the input by a constant value generally called gain. The value 255/5=51. Therefore, the input signal is multiplied by a value of 51.
  • Value 1023 in arduino subsystem means that it will map input voltages between 0 and the operating voltage(5V or 3.3V) into integer values between 0 and 1023.
  • The value 5/1023 determines the minimum value that can be detected. where 5 represents the reference voltage. It sets the value of a pulse width modulation output pin on a scale of 0 - 255 ().
