What are some strategies for improving group effectiveness and performance
Answer i) Groups often have a complex dynamic system. As a result, around 60% of the time groups fail to reach their potential. The following are some of the common reasons why groups fail to reach their potential-
a) Lack of clarity- Groups often falter because of the lack of clear goals and objectives. Being unclear about mutual goals and objectives often leads to unsatisfactory performance.
b) Lack of accountability- When a group neglects the concept of mutual accountability, tasks like decision-making become chaotic and disorderly.
c) Lack of trust among group members- A group is a trust-based unit. Lack of trust among group members often leads to miscommunication, which can be a barrier to innovation and progress.
e) Incompetent problem-solving skills- An inability to solve problems is a common problem amongst groups. Since everyone wants their idea to be heard over the other's, the underlying problems go completely unnoticed.
Answer ii) To successfully execute group work, a group should be willing to take the following steps-
i) Knowing your group members- Each group member must acknowledge the other group member's strengths and weaknesses. This will not only help in creating a bond among the members but will also help the leader assign tasks effectively.
ii) Assigning Roles and responsibilities- Roles and responsibilities should be assigned according to the group members' strengths and weaknesses.
iii) Tackling problems immediately- If there is a problem such as a conflict or a misunderstanding it should be dealt with immediately.
