Data Mining
Life of academic staff can be very challenging and demanding.
Even though it seems like a smooth sailing ship, many aspects might
challenge an individual employed in such sector.
One of the biggest challenges to overcome is to ensure to keep a
keen watch on all students enrolled in a specific course. The
obstacle levels up when the student number is higher in the class,
let's say more than fifty. Then one could imagine how difficult it
might be if the class number is beyond a hundred or two hundred,
for instance.
Dr. Prat is an academic staff at Fiji National University. He
teaches a generic course where all students from different
programmes are compelled to enrol in it. This would mean that the
class number is usually very high and keeping a good watch on all
students is merely impossible.
Dr. Prat is looking for avenues to make this possible. Being a
colleague, Dr. Prat thought to seek assistance from the Department
of Computer Science and Information Systems. Dr. Prat was given an
assurance that the Department of Computer Science and Information
Systems can use data mining tactics to resolve his hurdle.
Dr. Prat provided with two years of student coursework marks.
Your lecturer is seeking your help to find knowledge from the
provided dataset. You are to use the results for 2017 an 2018 to
pre-determine the AT-RISK future students.

Introduction:
DATA MINING : The process of extracting infromation in the form of patterns from the huge amount of data is known as data mining.
Data mining process involves :
In the above case study data mining process is used to extract the information of students from different programmes engage in genric course at Fiji National University under the supervision of Dr. Prat.
Various challenges in data mining process involve :
Problem / Domain
The domain or problem in above case study is to extract the information of students engage in a genric course from different programmes. The number of students are very high and it is difficult task to monitor the performance individually.
The department of computer science is provided with the 2 years students information of marks regarding their course work in year 2017 and 2018 to develop the patterns using various techniques in order to resolve the problem of Dr.Prat and keep good watch on each and every student.
AIM/OBJECTIVE
The main objective of Department of computer science and Information technology is to resolve the hurdle of Dr. Prat by tracking the record of high number of students involve in his genric course. These students are from different courses . In order to keep good watch on students by Dr. Prat data mining techniques are helpful . The huge amount of data provided by the Dr. Prat about the coursework marks of students get converted into various patterns . This allows Dr . Prat to access each and every student performance very closely and keep good watch on them and monitor At Risk future students.
Various techniques involve in data mining are:
DATA SOURCE
Data Source contains the information about the database and the server used.
The information obtain is in the form of flat files, xml files, images etc. in web mining the source of data is from web pages.
In above case study the main source of data must be data base and the log files.
Database consist of list of tables containing various information regarding student name , name of programme , student course , marks in the genric course, academic year etc.
Mainly SQL SERVER PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN ABOVE CASE OF FIJI UNIVERSITY in order to connect data from database.
The complete information is stored in the form of database and at various servers like ORACLE, ODBC .
