This study investigates the effect of ‘glass ceiling’ on women’s career advancement to top management. Although there is an uptrend in the number of women graduating from tertiary education and more have entered the workforce, they are still under-represented at the top management level in organizations. This study examines family factors, organizational culture, organizational networking, organizational practices and personality traits impact on women career advancement. Social support was tested as the moderator.
Glass Ceiling
The glass ceiling denotes the invisible challenges that hold the women employees back from attaining a higher position in a company. The problem of the glass ceiling is still existing even in the modern era despite the transformations that have taken place in work environments. Many companies in the world are reluctant to offer employment to women due to their maternal responsibilities. Even if they give employment to women, they will not be considered for filling higher positions in an organization. The glass ceiling is creating a roadblock to women in their career path. It affects the level of job satisfaction of women to a great extend. Further, the glass ceiling resulted in the discrimination of employees at the workplace.
Ways to break the glass ceiling
There are many ways in which women can break the glass ceiling barrier. Firstly, women employees could perform well and prove that they are serious in their jobs. Along with that, they shall present all their career achievements in the times of performance reviews in organizations. Self-monitoring the performance of women employees will be highly helpful in recognizing glass sealing if any. Also, women employees need to aim high positions from the beginning of their careers. The women employees need to build a good network to improve their career prospects to the maximum. Women employees normally have a tendency to underestimate their achievements. They should try to come out of this mental trap. They should not hesitate in highlighting the achievements in their career. Further women employees need to learn ways of balancing their personal lives and professional lives.Starting their own business is another option for women to break the glass ceiling barrier. It will give freedom and autonomy to women in reaching greater heights. Seeking a legal solution is the final option to deal with the problem of glass ceiling.
