Is there racially motivated unconscious bias in our society? If so, how do you become aware of these biases, educate ourselves, and move forward constructively?
Answer-
Yes, there are many people that are racially bias and many that
are not. We do have this issue and it is shown every day. Racism
has been around for decades and is still present today. A times we
go from an understanding to hating again as history just keeps
repeating. We educate and create new laws to protect but it just
goes back to hate. Will it ever stop, who knows? I wish everyone
would become aware and educate themselves to not be racially
biased, racism should not exist. Come on we are all human and bleed
the same. I am dark-skinned as I am Native American but I am also
French, so I am classified racially as “redskin” and a “honky”. I
am neither of those, I am human and so are the rest of everyone
else. Some can never be educated or their minds changed, so we will
never move forward constructively. I would love it if we ALL could
not just a small amount. Parents need to teach their future adults
not to judge base on color or beliefs.
The criminal justice system has it even harder as they are to
protect people. If a crime is committed they must act according to
the crime. They are our friends, neighbors, family, and yet they
cannot treat all of us that way. Race seems to affect the criminal
justice system more than anywhere else. Cops can treat 2 people the
same exact way but if a different race is involved it is
automatically a racial crime. Not saying that all cops are good or
bad, there is a mix depending on the state and city you are in. We
all are aware of what is happening in our country and we complain
but yet we do nothing about it. One way for police to improve
public relations is what my town has done. Our criminal justice
system gets involved with school functions, city celebrations, and
they even create their own functions. They will even stop and play
basketball with kids at the local court. Our town is very involved
and our police don’t judge based on race, I am thankful for that.
Our town is based on different cultures and different
beliefs.
