Identify a suitable adsorbent for the removal of these compounds:

-Natural Organic Matter

- Atrazine

- Chromium

- Mercury

- Calcium/Magnesium (hardness)

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. For Natural Organic Matter(NOM) removal the best suited adsorbent is Powdered Activated Carbon because of their good abrasion resistance and needed pore size distribution which removes almost 90% NOM.

2. For Atrazine removal the best suited adsorbent is Wood Charcoal which showed 95% removal of Atrazine. Activated Carbon can also be used as it gives 99% removal but Wood Charcoal is far cost effective. Wood Charcoal( 0.4$ per kg) where as Activated Carbon( 2.6-7$ per kg).

3.For Chromium removal the best suited adsorbent is Modified Rice Husk as it has a very high adsorption capacity (278mg/g) and is also low in cost.

4. For Mercury removal the best suited adsorbent is Granular Activated Carbon which removes 99.9% of mercury under optimised conditions.

5. For Calcium/Magnesium(hardness) removal the best suited adsorbent is Modified Pumice Stone which removes 96% Calcium and 93% Magnesium under optimal conditions. It is best suitable for the removal of hardness ions.
