List and describe the five stages of
group development and provide examples.
The five stages of group development
are:
- Forming: in the
forming stage, the team would be first meeting one another and the
team members would be formally introduced. In this method, there
would be sharing of the backgrounds, information as well as the
interests of the team members to form a first impression. This may
be in the form of an orientation sessions.
- Storming: when the
group would be starting to work together, they would be moving into
the storming stage. This is an unavoidable stage, where the members
of the new group would be competing with one another so as to
attain a status and so that their ideas would be accepted. There
would be development of conflicts within the team because of the
difference in opinions. The team leader requires to guide the team
so that the conflicts would be less. The team leader has to allow
more independence within the team and resolve the conflicts at
their fastest so that they would not grow fierce.
- Norming: in this
stage, the team begins to work effectively in the form of a team.
They have started to focus together on the goal and not in their
individual tasks. The team starts to respect one another and value
the differences that they have on an individual basis. There is
development of trust and work in order to accomplish a common
goal.
- Performing: in
this stage, teams function at high levels. These would tend to
focus on the goals as they have known one another and as they have
trusted one another. The team members rely on one another
functioning as interdependent individuals rather than independent
individuals. Decisions are made quickly along with solving problems
quickly without involvement of intervention by the team
leader.
- Adjourning: in
this stage, the project is about to come to an end l the team
members begin moving in separate directions.in this stage, the well
being of the team is looked into and not managing of the team is
important. Team member ensures that celebrations are done
appropriately.
