list and describe the 4 Piagetian stages of cognitive development?

Jean Piaget is a well-known psychologist for his work on children. He proposed Cognitive development theory. In this theory, he divided human development into 4 stages. Those four stages are the Sensorimotor stage, the Preoperational stage, the concrete operational stage, and the Formal Operational stage.

Sensorimotor stage: Children below 2 years old will be in this stage.

  • They will gain knowledge about their surroundings with the help of their sensory organs.
  • They will understand the concept of object permanence that even though objects disappeared from our line of sight they will exist in this environment.
  • They come to know that they can change the positions of objects

Preoperational Stage: Children whose age is in between 2 years and 7 years will be in this stage.

  • They will use symbols as a means to understand concepts.
  • Egocentrism is the main problem for children in this stage. Egocentrism means they believe that their view is the only view.
  • Language skills will be developed slowly.

Concrete operational stage: Children whose age is in between 7 years and 11 years will be in this stage.

  • Children will use a logical view to understand the concepts.
  • Children will overcome the egocentrism problem.
  • The physical quantity of the objects is the same even though we have changed its shape is the conservation concept. Children are capable to understand this concept.
  • Children can't use abstract view while looking at the objects.

Formal Operational Stage: Children whose age is above 11 years will be in this stage.

  • People will use an abstract view to understand the concepts.
  • They will use a philosophical view to understand the world.
  • They will choose their behavior based on moral values.
