Ethnomusicology from the point of view of gender is not the
study of women and music. Granted, concern over inequality in
scholarly treatment of female musical behaviors has led to
explorations of uncharted areas of women's music in order to
rectify the imbalance. Music, Gender, and Culture, however, is an
effort to demonstrate that, far from playing a game of academic
"catch up," the authors are applying new strategies to discover
what human involvement with music can teach us about one
another.
Music, Gender, and Culture, however is weighted toward women's
music, and all fifteen authors are female. Seven of the essays
compare the philosophies and behaviors of both men and women. The
most exemplary article in this regard is Susanne Ziegler's team
approach to the study of Turkish wedding music, in which male and
female students participated in gender-appropriate events,
subsequently compiling their findings into a balanced report.
Ethnomusicology is interested in 'contexts' that is why we study
things like music and identity, music and the environment, and
cultural exchange.
