What role does culture play in language and thinking?
Culture is one of the most important
factors that shapes one's personality, perspectives, lifestyle,
language and the way they think about various events in their
lives. Language is the expression of one's thoughts and one's
thoughts are regulated and restricted by the cultural factors that
govern a society. This is what differentiates developed countries
with individualistic societies, developing countries with
collective societies and underdeveloped societies with very strict
cultural impacts on the lives of the people.
Most of a person's thoughts are governed by the cultural elements
which further prevents or enriches the langauge, a kind of freedom
of expression both in spoken and written languages. Wherever people
had individual rights supported by culture, the society advanced,
one example from this is scientific advancements which went against
most of he belief system of religion and popular thoughts thus
these cultures prevented any element that prevented free thinking
and freedom of expression, including religion.
Few countries lay lots of restrictions on people thus limiting them
from thinking because language will be useful only when one is
allowed to think and allowed to express otherwise, it's of no use.
Thus culture plays an important role in thinking and language.
