Neutrophils are granular leukocytes or WBCs consists of 60-70% of all WBCs, they have two to five lobed nucleus connected by thin strands of chromatin, cytoplasm has ver fine pale granules.

Function-neutrophils are active in phagocytosis they can ingest bacteria and dispose of dead matter. After engulfing a pathogen during phagocytosis a neutrophil unleashes several chemicals to destroy the pathogen. These chemicals include the enzyme lysosome and strong oxidants. Neutrophils also contain defensins, proteind that exhibit a broad range of antibiotic activity against bacteria and fungi. Defensins form peptide spears that poke holes in microbe menbranes the resulting loss of cellular contents kills the invader.
