Pavement performance is an important factor in pavement design because it provides a framework upon which a judgement on the road is either success or failure, which is associated with the ability of the pavement to carry out the design loading. Based on these statements, briefly discuss a distinction between the two different types of failures.
Ans:
There are two types of pavements Rigid pavements and flexible pavements based on the construction and Loading conditions i.e, performance and maintenance of the road, Judgement of road is whether success or failure. For flexible pavements majorly two types of failure they are
1.Environmental distress: Outside influence affects the pavement performance they are categorized as environmental factors. Involves Snow, chemicals, water, and problem with the ageing of road. This distress observed from top to bottom of the road. The remedy is surface application. These include crack sealing, seal coating, chip seals, skin parching.
2. Structural distress: These structural failures are categorized as physical failures that found on pavement surface and sub-grade. Failure is due to overloading, wet-subgrade, frosting, and poor standard of design.
Few types of failures:
1.Alligator cracking
2. Depression failure
3.Corrugations
4.Potholes
5. Shoving
6. Rutting, etc
