Design an experiment that would resolve the nature versus nurture controversy. What are some reasons why this experiment hasn’t been done?
In psychology the debate between nature vs nurture is primarily
concerned with the amount to which the specific features of
behaviour is related i.e. if they are inherited(genetic) or is it
acquired( learned) characteristics.
And it is known that there are some physical features in our body
that have genetical influence . For example type of hair i.e. it
may be straight or curly, colour of the eye , colour of skin. These
are some common traits that we inherit. Apart from these there are
some characteristics also that we inherit but it does not have that
strong influence by the genes of our biological parents
Generally, about nature, we have a concept that nature is acquired
and is influenced by the genetical and other biological factors and
Nurture is believed to be to have been acquired due to external
factors like exposure experience and learning of a
person. We define nurture as the acquisition of almost
all behavioural traits from the external factors. John Locke in
1960 gave a term for nurture. He called it Tabula Rasa which - a
blank slate. And this blank slate is filled with the experiences we
acquire from the external factors daily experiences. Features which
develops in life in future, are viewed as the creation of
development
The nature-nurture debate is concerned with the relative contribution that both influences make to human behaviour.According to the controversy, nature and nurture are attached. Some genes cannot be triggered without definite contributions from environment. For example, the progress of vision is a major example. Individuals cannot develop standard vision without exposure to visual impetuses.
The whole nature vs nurture controversy moves around the factors that shapes a human being. Is it natural inheritance or we are only influenced by the external factors. Well the whole concept is wrong, and the correct answer is it should NATURE and NURTURE. And this concept is based on the experiment and research designed and done by researcher Beben Benyamin that it is 49% genetics and 51% external factors. And this research was done on twins. Benyamin said that both nature and nurture are important causes of distinction in individuals and genetics contributes to all qualities in some person the contribution may be more and, in some contribution, may be less.
