4)In what ways do nature and nurture affect personality?

(A)One’s personality is shaped by a combination of nature (genetic) and nurture (environmental) influences.

(B)Recent studies conducted among birds have demonstrated that environment plays a bigger role in forming personality than genetics and almost similar happens in humans also.

(C)Genetically (nature), for example, we see a child as confident like his father and mother or truthful like his grandmother.

(D)But these things easily change when a child interacts with the environment or surroundings (nurture) through social interactions, upbringing, schooling and peer intyeractions.

(E)For example, if friends are good and social, the child also becomes so. This is the aspect of nurture or environment.

(F)Mr. Albert Bandura proposed his Social Learning Theory which is a remarkable concept and describes that behavior, learning and personality of a child is determined by social influences, surrounding and environment (nurture).

5. What are some personalities that is influenced by nurture?

The environment (nurture) in which one is raised has an enormous impact on one’s personality. Those who experience abuse or neglect as children are more likely to seek out unhealthy relationships themselves or have trust issues. Alternatively, a child whose parents overly indulge him/her is more likely to have a superiority complex or a lack of empathy for others.

Following personalities are greatly influenced by nurture:

  • openness to experience (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious)
  • conscientiousness (efficient/organized vs. extravagant/careless)
  • extraversion (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved)
  • agreeableness (friendly/compassionate vs. challenging/callous)
  • neuroticism (sensitive/nervous vs. resilient/confident)
