Explain the pathway that transmits pain stimuli to the brain.

Explain the pathway that transmits pain stimuli to the brain.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The lateral tract of spinothalamic tract is responsible for picking up pain, the receptors that work with these tracts are known as nociceptors, these specially detect tissue damage and extreme temperatures. There are two nocioceptors, A-delta fibers, which detect fast pain or pin prick pain or C-fibers which are responsible for slow pain or lasting and enduring pain. When the C fibers are activated by their receptors, the impulse is first passed to the dorsal root ganglion, than to the central process and synapses into the Rexed laminae-2 and 3, from the rexed laminae it crosses over (decussates) and travels through anterior white commisure than go vertically upwards to the remaining of spinal cord and than into the brain, where the signals are passed to the thalamus and than sent to the cerebral cortex where pain is perceived.

In case of A delta fibers, they follow the same pathway of C fibers, except that they synapse into the rexed laminae-1 and 5, they also pass through anterior commisure into antero lateral tract than to the brain.
