Neurotransmitter System Questions:
1. Comment on disorders wherein there is a change in the dopaminergic system. Give the change that is observed.
2. What drugs typically target the dopamine system? What effect do these drugs have on the brain?
3. Several drugs target the serotonin system. What effects do these drugs have on the brain?
Answer any one of them would help!!!
1. Chane in dopaminergic system functionality is linked with many neurological disorders include schizophrenia, bipolar depressive disorder, addiction, and Parkinson's disease.
2. They are classified as antipsychotic drugs such as phenotiazines, thioanthenes, butyrophenones and diphenypbutylpiperidines with high affnity for dopamine receptors which is located not only on the post-synaptic membrane but also on the cell bodies, dendrites and nerve terminals of presynaptic cells. It influences the dopaminergic neurotransmission at various sites in both the pre- and postsynaptic cell. It causes decreased brain volume with associated increased volume of the ventricles.
3. Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MOAIs) are class of drugs which inhibit breaking down of serotonin under the catalysis of enzyme MOAIs. Another therapy involves the prevention of reuptake of serotonin by the action of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which renders more serotonin in synaptic cleft available for target cells. It makes availability of more chemicals in brain cells to effect the changes in both cells and circuits which has been impacted by depression.
