Know the 31 pairs of spinal nerves and how many in each section?
1. The nervous system is divided into central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. spinal nerves are the major part of the peripheral nervous system. They are composed of both motor and sensory fibres.
The spinal nerves are named according to where they emerge from the spine. Spinal nerve is attached to the spinal cord by ventral root which relays motor information, and dorsal root which relays sensory information. Both dorsal and ventral root of the spinal cord forms the spinal nerve.
There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves. The division of spinal nerves include:
Cervical - 8 C1 to C8 from cervical spine.
Thoracic - 12 T1 to T12 from thoracic spine.
Lumbar - 5 L1 to L5 from lumbar spine.
Sacral - 5 S1 to S5 from sacrum.
Coccygeal - 1 from the coccyx.
The fibers of the sensory root carries sensory inormation to the brain. The fibers of the motor root carries motor information from the brain.
