Expert Solution

Which of the following is a characteristic of both spinal and cranial nerves?

Answer: They contain bundles of axons.

Each spinal nerve is connected to a segment of the spinal cord by two bundles of axons. Spinal nerves are formed from the fusion of anterior and posterior nerve roots. Posterior nerve root conducts nerve impulses from sensory receptors present in the skin, muscles, and internal organs into the central nervous system, while the anterior nerve root conducts nerve impulses from central nervous system to effector organs.

Most of the spinal and cranial nerves are composed of both sensory and motor nerves. Cranial nerves I, II, VIII are considered as pure sensory.
