Interpersonal communication is very important for the radiographer.Communication can be defined as the process by which information is exchanged between two or more persons.

  • Verbal communication skills :

It is the communication that the words, hence radiographer must use polite words while dealing with patients. Following points should be noted while communicating with the patients:

  • Excessive use of technical words should be avoided, since it can cause confusion and result in miscommunication
  • Excessive use of slangs should also be avoided
  • Dental radiographer should speak in a pleasant and relaxed manner.
  • Using soft toned voice is always preffered as it is soothing and effective in conveying warmth and concern.
  • They should avoid speak in hurry and in a tensed manner.
  • Radiographer should not be aloud while speaking as it may increase patient's anxiety.  

Non-verbal communication skills :   

It includes body language ,posture, facial expressions, etc, . It can be substituited for verbal messages. For example , nod can be a signal for agreement ad nodding head sideways signals non-agreement. Non verbal communication can be done by :

  • An attentive posture , leaning slightly towards the patient should be maintained
  • Statement should be accompanied with the smile.
  • Radiographer should show interest in patient's curiosities.
  • Eye contact should be maintained with the patient.

Patient with special need :

  • Educating the patient about the importance of the dental radiograph is critical.yet very often it is overlooked by dental proffesional resulting in fear and hesitation in the patient about the use of X-ray radiation.
  • A prepared oral presentation with visualize helps the patient to develop greater confidence in radiography and radio grapher.
  • Printed information about dental radiograph can also be used to educate the dental patients.
