One of the problems with non-verbal language is that it is difficult to interpret. You are giving a presentation to your associates at work (or classmates in class) and you observe the following non-verbal behavior in your audience members.

One associate/student is writing the entire time you are talking.

One associate/student is smiling although you are talking about a serious issue.

One associate/student has his/her eyes closed.

Discuss three possible interpretations of each non-verbal behavior and analyze how each interpretation would influence the speaker’s evaluation of audience feedback/change.

Expert Solution

It is true that non verbal communication that deals with body language and gestures is actually difficult to interpret and if we look at the following non verbal behavior we need to understand the importance and then reach to a point where this is applicable and what this is all about.

One associate/student is writing the entire time you are talking.

This can be the case that the person is noting down minutes from what I am speaking or the person is not attentive in what is being discussed, or it may be the case that teh person is actually quite interested and he is noting down the questions he needs to ask the speaker at the end of the presentation. Depending on how the person reacts after the presentation ends the valuation of the audience feedback may act or change.

One associate/student is smiling although you are talking about a serious issue.

In this case it may happen that the person is not at all interested in the presentation and is busy thinking about something else, or it may happen that the person is aware of what the speaker is expressing and is relating to what he knows regarding the topic that is being discussed in this context.

One associate/student has his/her eyes closed.

It may happen that the person is actually listening to the discussion with full concentration and in order to get rid of any distraction, the person has closed his or her eyes. Or it may happen that the person is sleepy and has gone to sleep or it may also happen that the dicussion is boring to the person and he or she has slept off because of tirednedd.
