Compare and contrast the structural and functional differences between the parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous systems. Identify an organ that is innervated by both systems and explain the effect of each system on the organ ?
sympathetic nervous system-
The fibres arise from the thoracolumbar segment of spinal cord (T1-L2)
The preganglionic fibre is short as compared to postganglionic fibre.
Postganglionic neurotransmitter is adrenergic in nature.
This system is responsible for fight and flight response.
Effects of sympathetic nervous system-
1. Dilate pupil.
2. Increases heart rate and force of contraction.
3. Dilate lung bronchioles.
4. Decrease motility of GIT.
5. Relaxes bladder.
parasympathetic nervous system-
the nerves arises form the cranio-sacral segment of spinal cord.
The preganglionic fibre is long as compared to postganglionic fibre.
Postganglionic neurotransmitter is acetylcholine.
This system is responsible for relaxing the body.
Effects of this system are-
1. Constricts the pupil
2. Decreases heart rate and force of contraction.
3. Constrict the lung bronchioles.
4. Increases GIT motility.
5. Constricts the urinary bladder.
