Compare the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems in terms of the location of their ganglia and the distribution of their nerves.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Sympathetic and parasympathetic system both are under autonomous nervous system and their functions are antagonistic. In sympathetic nervous system preganglionic nervous system is of small size and the ganglia is located near spinal cord but away from effector. Postganglionic nerve fibers are long and present in large numbers. Sympathetic nervous system thus bear shorter neuron pathway and faster system.

Parasympathetic nervous system shows exactly opposite position and distribution. Preganglionic nerve fiber is large and ganglia is away from spinal cord but close to effectors. Size of postganglionic fibers are short and few in number thus together generating a longer neuron pathway and slower system.

Sympathetic nervous system supply greater splanchnic nerves in stomach, deodenum ,jejunum & illum whereas parasympathetic nervous system supply anterior and posterior vagal trunk(branch of vagas nerves), vagas nerve and posterior vagal trunk respectively. In kidney sympathetic nervous system supply thoracic and lumber splancic nerve whereas vagas nerve is supplied by parasympathetic nervous system.
