DSC is one of the most useful analytical tools in investigating polymer properties.
i. What information can be obtained when analyzing amorphous polymers. What is an amorphous polymer and what is the glass transition temperature?
ii. What information can be obtained when analyzing crystalline polymers? What is a crystalline polymer and what is the heat of crystallization, heat of melting, and percent crystallinity?
iii. How is DSC used to distinguish between crystalline and amorphous polymers.
iv. Give one reference where DSC was used to investigate the crystalline properties of polymers
Use of DSC for amorphous polymer.
- for identification of amorphous polymer
- to know about the effect of aging.
- to know about heat capacity of substance.
- to determine the best processing temperature
- to know about transition temperature glass of amorphous polymer tg.
Amorphous polymer are those polymer in which constituting molecule or arrange in random pattern there is no regular pattern for long distance.
Glass transition temperature is the temperature above which the amorphous substance changes in crystalline substance. For glass it is about 100oc.
Use of DSC in crystalline polymer
- you know about crystallization Kinetics of solid.
- to know about degree of cure.
- to know about percentage of crystallization in given solid, to know about the effect of aging of Crystal, and to know about heat capacity of Crystal.
4- Amorphous nature is indicated by the presence of the glass transition temperature (i.e. temperature in which solid amorphous state change to "liquid" state). In DSC, the spectrum change continuously. Crystallibe nature is indicated by the presence of the melting temperature (i.e temperature in which the solid crystalline state change to liquid
