What would the expected DSC profile for a theoretical 100% crystalline polymer, a semi-crystalline polymer and an amorphous look like?

Solutions

Expert Solution

For crystalline polymer and semi crystalline polymer , melting point peak becomes sharp . For semi crystalline materials , polymorphism or allotropism can also be observed .

On the other hand , DSC of amorphous materials show broad melting peak and something called glass transition temperature can be seen for amorphous materials . By these means , we can differentiate between them.

The graphs are given in the attachment.

(Amorphous vs semi-crystalline) Using words and visuals, describe the amorphous and semi-crystalline arrangements of polymer chains when forming a solid. Using examples of specific polymers, explain why some types of polymer chains do not readily align and tend to be amorphous while others readily form semi-crystalline structures.
