Using three examples for two body systems, explain the physiological concept of structure function relationships - structure enables function

Solutions

Expert Solution

Structure determines function, what it means is that the way something is arranged enables it to play its role, fulfill its job, within an organism

Red blood cells are they are plump at their periphery and very thin in the center, i.e they are biconcave in shape, and moreover as they mature they loos their nucleus, this biconcave shape and loss of nucleus provides greater surface area than other cells have, as a result they can carry more of hemoglobin molecules, this help red blood cells perform their functions greatly, they are more effiicient in transport of gases like oxygen and carbon di oxide.

The walls of capillaries are just one cell thick. Capillaries therefore allow molecules to diffuse across the capillary wall, these thin walls allow oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients to exchange between red blood cells and surrounding tissues. This exchange of molecules is not possible across the walls of other types of blood vessel because the walls are too thick.

The flap of our eye lid are thin shaped, because of this the thin flap of your eyelid can snap down to clear away dust particles and almost instantaneously slide back up to allow you to see again, the arrangement and function of the nerves and muscles that serve the eyelid allow for its quick action and retreat.
