History : Which of the Julio-Claudian emperors was the most effective at fostering cordial relationships with the senators?
Agustus - He wanted to maintain the senate as the embodiment of roman tradition. No senator served without his approval. He cut the numbers from 1000 to 600 senators.
Tiberius - Had difficult relationship with the Senate. According to Tacitus, Tiberius derided the Senate as "men fit to be slaves"
Caligula - The successful conspiracy that ended Caligula's life was hatched by the disgruntled Praetorian Guard with backing by the Senate, indicate that Caligula had difficult relationship with the Senate
Claudius - Claudius was constantly forced to shore up his position - resulting in the deaths of many senators, indicating absence of cordial relationship with Senators. Many in the Senate remained hostile to Claudius, and many plots were made on his life. This hostility carried over into the historical accounts. As a result, Claudius reduced the Senate's power for the sake of efficiency.
Nero - His respect of the Senatorial autonomy, which distinguished him from Caligula and Claudius, was generally well received by the Roman Senate.
Thus, it can be observed that Nero was the most effective at fostering cordial relationships with the senators
