  • ANSWER-Emotion regulation means when we try to control our emotions consciously or non-consciously.Conscious control means giving active thought to a behaviour in order to control our emotions, and Non-conscious control means the thoughts and behaviours which we cannot control like our temperament and how some of us are not very emotional.
  • These strategies of emotion regulation are also coping mechanisms, which includes emotion focused coping and problem focused coping.
  • Emotion focused coping helps to reduce negative emotional responses to stress, like fear, anxiety, embarrassment, depression etc. When th source of stress is outside a person's control, this form of coping is used. For example, people engage in drinking alcohol or taking drugs to reduce their stress, meditation exercises like mindfulness, eating more comfort food, writing a diary, even suppressing their emotions for a long period of time not wanting to deal with it which could lead physical health problems, praying for guidance ans strength etc.
  • Problem focused coping is used when a problem is solved in practical ways,i.e. the source of stress is dealt in a direct manner. For example,if someone is stressed about not being able to meet their work deadline, they would use time management strategy to design a schedule in order to manage and complete all their tasks, starting from high priority to low priority. This is giving active thought, and taking the problem head on and trying to solve it to regulate and control the stress and frustration one is going through.
