What are 4 emotion regulation techniques? Explain each with a concrete example.

Emotion regulation is done for identification as well as feelings modification. There are various regulation techniques for emotions, which include:

- thinking about things that are pleasant. When a person is in a stressed situation, in order to come out, they should think of pleasant situations, such as the happiest memories of life, thinking of such a a memory would bring a smile to one’s face, example a childhood vacation.

- suppression of thoughts that are depressing. This is a continuation of the above technique. Suppression of depressing thoughts can be done by reinforcing positive self image. This can be done by thinking of past achievements or any significant deed that might have helped someone else. This helps in confidence boosting.

- engagement in relaxation techniques such as massages or exercises or listening to music. Music or relaxation techniques help the person free their stress, momentarily, with the ability to further concentrate on their work.

- reappraisal of a situation. Reappraisal of a situation is known to influence positive emotions and reduction of negative emotions. In this technique, there is cognitive reframing of a situation such that it would become more positive. Example, if I drop my lunch, I might see it as an opportunity to concentrate in some other activity.
