Define task performance and contextual performance.
Task performance: Task performance is defined as the work activities that contribute to an organization's technical core areas.
Contextual performance: Contextual performance is defined as activities that contribute to the social and psychological core of the organization.
Discuss the differences between them.
(1)As explained above, task performance is related to core activities while contextual performance is realted to overall organization's activities.
(2)For example, core engineering activities come under task performance.
While volunteering for additional work, following organizational rules and procedures even when personally inconvenient, assisting and cooperating with coworkers come under contextual performance.
(3)Task performance converts into contextual performance in competitive scenarios when an organization expects its employees to touch and perform in different areas of the organization.
Challenges faced in conducting such approach.
(1)Only focusing on task performance can lead to stress due to repetitive nature of work and thus presents challenge for organization in terms of high employee turn over or high attrition rate.
(2)Contextual performance increases a feeling of competition in organization and leads to challenges such as proper skill development and training of employees to meet organizational needs.
