how is PLA synthesized
PLA is the short form of Poly Lactic Acid which is a polymer of
Lactic acid. This is a misnomer as the polymer generated is not
acid its ester molecule and formation of this ester molecule is
done by esterification where water molecule removes from the
structure. Poly Lactic Acid is a type of biopolymer which is
biodegradable. It is used in medical devices, 3D printed prototypes
and as thermoplastics.
It is generally synthesized in two pathways by the condensation reaction of Lactic acid or cyclic Lactide. But the polymerization condensation must be bellow 200 0C to prevent the formation of lactide monomers.
