how is PLA synthesized

how is PLA synthesized

Solutions

Expert Solution

PLA is the short form of Poly Lactic Acid which is a polymer of Lactic acid. This is a misnomer as the polymer generated is not acid its ester molecule and formation of this ester molecule is done by esterification where water molecule removes from the structure. Poly Lactic Acid is a type of biopolymer which is biodegradable. It is used in medical devices, 3D printed prototypes and as thermoplastics.

It is generally synthesized in two pathways by the condensation reaction of Lactic acid or cyclic Lactide. But the polymerization condensation must be bellow 200 0C to prevent the formation of lactide monomers.

For every pyrimidine mononucleotide synthesized de novo, 5 ATPs are consumed. For every purine nucleotide synthesized de novo, 9 ATPs are consumed. Because of this high cost, it is essential to tightly control nucleotide synthesis to closely match the needs of the cell at any given time. When the energy charge of a cell is low, cells will not replicate DNA. There is no need for deoxyribonucleotides (dNTPs) so their synthesis is turned off. Conversely, when the energy charge is...
