PLA (Polylactic acid) is a polymer formed by the condensation poylmerization of Lactic acid as the name suggestions.

PLA is mostly known for its application in 3D printing as it is uniquely able to printed at a low temperature whereas other materials need a powerful heat source so that they can be used as 3D printing material. Another major reason why PLA is popular today is the fact that is very cheap, easy to synthesize as well as is eco-friendly compared to other metallic feeds that can contaminate ground water.

Corn and sugarcane crops are widely used as raw materials for the manufacture of PLA. In USA, where PLA first started gaining popularity, Corn is widely cultivated and sugarcane does have some prominence. Therefore it was easier to manufacture leading to its popularity.

It is easy to synthesize as the raw materials mentioned above are cheap and also a large portion of the wasted crops are also suitable for PLA production. The process is also not complicated.
