explain how PLA is biodegradable?

explain how PLA is biodegradable?

Solutions

Expert Solution

PLA (Polylactic acid) is a polymer of high levels polylactic acid molecules which is thermoplastic aliphatic polyester that are derived from corn starch, tapioca products etc.

For degradation of PLA abiotically usually three mechanisms are followed as below :.

a) Hydrolytic reaction : In this hydrolysis reactions the ester group of polylactic acid molecule main chain break down and reduces molecular weight.

   -COO- + H2O -----> -COOH + OH-

   Ester    water    carboxylic acid hydroxyl

b) Using heat (thermal degradation) : In this process heavy complex PLA molecules are degraded to lighter molecules with reduced molar mass and lactide molecule in presence of high temperatures.

c) Using light (Photo degradation) : In this process Ultraviolet light is used for the degradation of PLA molecule

Biotically PLA is degraded (Biodegradation) : The digested PLA molecules to oligomers and monomers in present of UV light or heat or moisture gets assimilated and biodegraded using microorganisms.

a) PLA decomposes into water and carbon dioxide in 47 to 90 days by hydrolytic reactions using minimum essential medium (MEM that contain Calcium chloride, sodium chloride along with the supplementation of foetal bovine serum where submersion takes place. After 30 days it is decomposed to PLLA (Poly-L-Lactide) lose its 20% weight.

b) Degradation using microorganisms (Composting): Microorganisms like Amycolatopsis and Saccharothrix contain PLA depolymerase that degrade PLA.

Microorganism like Tritirachium album contain enzyme called Pronase, proteinase K that also involve in degradation of PLA.

Hypothetical design and in vitro testing of a directly implantable biodegradable scaffold for bone clinical applications. 1- Define the clinical need. And the impact of the clinical bone and numbers and annual costs 2- The scaffold ( provide details of the polymer/blend of polymers that you propose to make your scaffold from) 3- Surface treatment regimes (need to consider a method that allows for multiple zonally arranged functional groups within a continuous scaffold for the production of a hierarchical structure....

Because plastic is non-biodegradable, this means that when we use and dispose of plastic bags they will be taking up space in our landfills (or become a part of the giant island of plastic waste in the Pacific Ocean) forever. Show and explain why a ban on plastic grocery bags is inefficient (Hint: think of grocery stores (and by proxy grocery store shoppers) as being on the demand side here and plastic bag manufacturers as being on the supply side)....

Describe one application where a biodegradable polymer has been used, and contrast this to an application where a biostable polymer has been used. Your answer should be a comprehensive account of each application, with diagrams if appropriate, with a specific focus on the characteristics, of the relevant polymer category, that make them suitable for the application. Suppose a company can replace the packing material it currently uses with a biodegradable packing material. The company believes this move to biodegradable packing materials will be well-received by the general public. However, the biodegradable packing materials are more expensive than the current packing materials and the contribution margin ratios of the related products will drop. What are the arguments for the company to use the biodegradable packing materials? What are the arguments for the company to not use the...
