overview:
The communications Decency Act of 1996 was the implemented to regulate pornographic material on the Internet by the U.S. government. In the year 1995 it was brought to the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science, and Transportation by Senators James Exon and Slade Gorton and was added in June 14, 1995. It was Title V of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The amendment that became the CDA was added to the Telecommunications Act by an 84–16 vote on June 14, 1995.
purpose and impacts:
The law's main purpose was to restrain the plentitude of pornography and other obscene material. This was one attempt to keep children away from inappropriate communications. The act was also created to protect families from electronic stalking. This law brought a wave in the field of telecommunications. Online slander is any false statement, presented as fact, which is published online and which is injurious to the someone's reputation, whether through neglect or on purpose. If you have been the victim you do have legal options. Most of the legal issues are covered in the Communications Decency Act of 1996.
Though this law internet prevents the mishandling by the website operators,it does have some loopholes. The recent facebook controversy over the us elections is a major example. We could say that cybercrime has been vastly prevented by this law.
