What was the Harlem Renaissance, and who were some of the most famous participants?
Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual, social and artistic explosion which took place in Harlem during 1918 - mid 1930. This was considered as rebirth of African-American arts. This influenced African and Caribbean colonies living in Paris.
In 1917, the premiere of " Three plays for a Negro theatre" took place. These plays written by Ridgely Torrence, showed African-American actors portraying complex emotions and rejecting the stereotype of blackface.This was called the most important event in the history of African Americans in theatre. Another landmark was in 1919, when poet Claude Mckay published "If we must die" which brought political dimension to African cultural inheritance. In 1917, Hubert Harrison, "Father of Harlem Radicalism", founded Liberty League and The Voice, the first organization and first newspaper of new negro movement.
Harlem Renaissance grew out of thr changes after the abolition of slavery in African-American community.
