What is the definition of ‘Meaning’ according to Dr. Martin Seligman and how can meaning in life be nurtured – give at least one example?
Dr. Martin Seligman as part of his positive psychology brought out a concept called PERMA model which refers to positive emotions, engagement, relationship, meaning and achievement in order to lead a happy and content life, people need to hold on to positive emotions, engaging in productive and fruitful activities, maintaining healthy relationships and building a sense of achievement are all necessary. However, we do this for our own sake but the real meaning in life according to Dr. Martin Seligman lies in the service to other people and nature. This would mean that one needs to overcome the obsession of materialistic pleasures and short time happiness and engage in more social and environmental activities that would help one find the real meaning of life. For example, volunteering to provide food to the poor or people who are affected by natural disaster, helping the disabled, elderly, homeless etc. would all give one real happiness and satisfaction through which one could find meaning.
