The Harlem Renaissance was the period that lasted between the 1910s via the mid-1930s; it was a golden age of African American culture which manifested dance, music, fashion, art, literature, and theater. The period aimed at promoting the African American culture, Zora Hurston was an American filmmaker, author, and anthropologist. She played a significant role in promoting African American culture, and initially, she published her research on hoodoos, and wrote more than 50 plays, short stories, and essays (Krasner & David, 2016). Neale conducted ethnographic and anthropological research while a student since she had significant interests in Caribbean folklore, and African American, and aimed at finding out how it contributed to the community's identity.

The African American culture influenced Hurston's thoughts and ideas in her writings. She wrote short satires derived from the African American racial division and experiences, which were published in The New Negro and Fire (Spencer & Stephen, 27). The writings symbolized the struggles and the experiences I underwent as an African American woman. Hurston's writings were un-recognized in the early years, but they later gained popularity and have been published over the years. The writings exemplified the great attachment she had with the African American culture.
