What is the treatment method in Freud's psychoanalytic theory?
Psychoanalytic theory a therapeutic method developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century is used for treating mental disorders by examining the interaction of conscious and unconscious components in a person.s mind. It brings out suppressed fears and struggles into the conscious mind by using methods like free association and dream analysis.
Free association is the interpretation of the content of the conscious mind without any censorship as a help to gain access to the unconscious mind. This was an alternate method to hypnosis wherein a patient is fully conscious while recovering important memories. In this method, the patients spoke for themselves instead of repeating the thoughts of therapists.
Dream analysis was a method developed to explore the unconscious. According to Freud the unconscious mind reveals the true emotions, thoughts and feelings of an individual. Dreams consist of manifest content and latent content. Latent content is not remembered when a person wakes up while manifest content is the content that a person remembers when he wakes up. Understanding the manifest content of dreams can help treat the individual of disorders.
