Do you think corporations should ban labor unions to lower their corporate’s payroll tax, to prevent employees, who are apart of labor unions from decreasing productivity in the workplace and hurting the company’s profits, when their union’s demands aren’t met?
Trade unions play an important role in promoting efficiency through better working conditions, equity through fair wages and benefits, voice through job protection and security. The government officially encourages collective bargaining practice to protect the rights of workers by joining together to negotiate better wages and employment conditions. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations enshrined in article 23 the right of every worker to join a trade union to protect his/her interests.
On the other side of spectrum, the unionization of labor force is the main reason for higher consumer prices because of higher wages and decreased productivity. Unionization of labor force also breads indiscipline among the members of workforce and also conflict with other stakeholders of the organization like management and shareholders.
Instead of banning the trade unions out rightly, the corporations should recognize the positive role they play in promoting healthy industrial relations. The corporations should also educate and encourage the workforce in promoting cordial work place relationships and also to negate the negative manifestations of trade unions.
