Describe how crime analysis plays a role in each of the following: standard model of policing, broken windows policing, hotspots policing, community policing, Compstat, and problem-oriented policing.
Let us begin crime analysis with standard model of policing. These are the most traditional approaches dealing with the crime. These are often termed as a standard model procedures that are being followed in every crime which includes investigation of crime, size of police force to be increased, quick response to emergency calls & random patrolling all over the places. It is reviewed that random patrolling proves to be little effective in preventing or combating crime. With respect of broken windows policing we can explain that if police can focus on less serious nature of crimes in the beginning itself then it can prevent it from becoming a serious one. Successful results can be ensured in preventing crimes if place or area based problem-oriented interventions can be carried out in different zones. If any disorder happens in an area that needs to be tackled very strictly in order to prevent serious crimes to take place. In broken windows policing citizen are not necessarily arrested or taken into custody. Another effective strategy is Hotspot policing because it takes advantage of the fact that crime is strongly concentrated in a small number of places across cities. If those effected areas are being tackled properly then the root of the crime gets effected. Hotspot policing generate modest crime control gains specially in areas where high crime rates are very high. Whereas community-oriented approach also quite effective as community groups tackle the disorder collectively in such a way that still respects the civil liberties of offenders. In this way any chaos can be averted peacefully. In problem-oriented policing demads for skills, procedures & research techniques to analyse problems & also analyse police effectiveness to solve it. In this approach research methods, data collection & analysis takes place within the police agency to get in- depth knowledge of particular crime or disorder issues. The agency must know itself when analysis is required, what scope is needed, whether they can conduct the analysis or they need help of external agencies.
