An "interface," is the means in which a person or a machine that controls a software application or hardware device. A interface is said to be good if it provides a "user-friendly" experience, allowing the user to interact with the software or hardware in a natural and intuitive way.

The Human Machine Interface (HMI) is the interface between the processor user and the processor. That is, it's a user's dashboard. As it name implies, It is a component that enables interaction between human and machine.

The hardware and software which belongs in this interface that allows user inputs to be translated as signals for machines that, in turn, provide the required result to the user back.

The human-machine interface is also termed as man-machine interface (MMI), computer-human interface, or human-computer interface.

HMI is most commonly used in the context of an industrial process. And it can be used to;

  1. Visually display data
  2. Track production time, trends, and tags
  3. Oversee KPIs
  4. Monitor machine inputs and outputs

There are numerous design principles and guidelines involved with designing an HMI. So a good HMI follow all these design principles and guidelines. Here are some characteristics of good HMI and they are;

  • Don't try to stuff all the information for each user into a single interface or group of screens. Try to find out the information that the users want to know and control and how they would like to interact with the system. According that build separate HMI for complex system
  • The interface should be simple, even intuitive. The less training required to use the interface the more it will be used and appreciated.
  • There should be visibility into all areas without overwhelming the user with extraneous or unneeded information.

Aa bad HMI has the following issues;

  • It overwhelm operators with too much data. To solve that we need focus only on what’s needed for them to understand the state of the machine or process.
  • It let layout and design factors detract from situational awareness. Data overload and focus on the wrong information are two of the most common culprits of bad HMI
  • It doesn't use caution any when developing graphics. It limits colors and animated features. It’s not necessary to use all color and animations available in the software.
