A mold is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. Bacteria are genrally smaller and more numerous in size.

Molds can grow on any substance when moisture is present.They reproduce by spores, and when thespores are dispersed by air currents and land on moist surface suitable for life, they begin to grow.

Fungal colonisationis identified by the presence of vegetative growth represented by ramifying hyphae. The colonisation may be temporal and microscopic, or extensive and obvious by sight and smell in the buildings with moisture problems.
