  1. Suppose these physicians are interested in further investigating abnormal chromosomal development. They recruit 6 women from a local hospital who meet the following requirements: they have had at least 1 pregnancy loss (miscarriage) in their lifetime, and 2) their doctors properly documented their levels of PAPP-A in the first trimester of each pregnancy. PAPP-A is used as a measure of fetal chromosomal development during the first trimester of development. Low levels of PAPP-A have been associated with many fetal chromosomal abnormalities. The physicians believe that levels of PAPP-A (x variable) may be related to pregnancy loss (y variable): they predict that women with low levels of PAPP-A will experience more pregnancy losses in their lifetime. The data are below. Plot the data in a scatterplot. Draw your best estimate of the regression line. What direction is the correlation?

  1. Based on the results of the study described in Question #2, the physicians rerun the same study with 600 women. Results of the correlation analysis are as follows: r = -.464, p = .0091, a = .05. State the direction of the correlation, whether it is significant, and provide an interpretation of the results.
  1. What is the r2 value and its corresponding interpretation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given for a correlation test

r = -.464, p = .0091, a = .05.

the direction of the correlation is opposite to each other because r is negative, which means increase in Average PAPP-A level during first trimester of pregnancy decreases the # of pregnancy losses in lifetime.

here for the correlation test p-value is given as 0.0091 and the level of significance alpha = 0.05,

since p-value is less than alpha we reject null hypothesis and conclude that there is a significant correlation exists between the given variables.

r2 value = r2 = (-0.464)2 = 0.215

Interpretation of r2 : - The model explains 21.5% of the variability between the  # of pregnancy losses in lifetime using the  Average PAPP-A level during first trimester of pregnancy as an independent variable.

Suppose a research team is interested in the behavioral ramifications that may develop from women and young girls receiving the HPV vaccine at an early age. The research hypothesis is that women and girls that receive the vaccine are less likely to follow federal recommendations that mandate these women to undergo regular screening for cervical cancer. The research team decides to investigate this relationship by following a group of women and girls aged 12-21 for up to 10 years and...

A researcher was interested in investigating if younger women feel more positively toward themselves than older women. She obtains the cooperation of five mother-daughter pairs. The daughters are all college students. She then administers a measure of self-esteem to these ten women. The scores range from zero to ten with ten meaning high self-esteem. The scores are as follows: Mother-Daughter Pair Mother Daughter 1 4 6 2 10 10 3 6 8 4 9 7 5 6 9 1. State...

Suppose the sales team at Apple is interested in investigating whether the colours of the iPod Touch have any impact on sales. To test this, they use five different colours for the new iPod Touch. The following table shows the number of each colour of 1335 iPods sold during the first month at one retailer. At the 1% significance level, test whether the number of iPods sold in each colour is uniform. Keep 4 decimal places for intermediate calculations. iPod...
Suppose you are interested in the behaviors of physicians that have high ratings of patient satisfaction.
Suppose you are interested in the behaviors of physicians that have high ratings of patient satisfaction. The research goal is to identify the behaviors in the natural clinical settings of these successful physicians so that these behaviors can be built into the curricula of medical preparation programs. The main data were collected by the video recording of five randomly selected physician-patient encounters from 10 physicians who have been rated highly by patients in a reliable satisfaction survey. Assume that you...

Suppose you are interested in knowing the average cholesterol level of all women between the ages of 21 and 30 who live in College Station. Everyone in a class (100 students) takes a random sample of 50 females in the College Station area between the ages of 21 and 30. Each student calculates the average cholesterol in their sample.
