An organ is defined as relatively independent part of the body that carries one or more special functions.
An organ is formed by a group of tissues that are adapted to perform specific functions.
Examples:
EYE is an organ that is made up of tissues like cornea, sclera , choroid, retina ,iris, pupil, lens, etc...that perform a function of vision.
other examples of an organ are EAR, NOSE,SKIN(largest organ), HEART,LIVER,KIDNEY etc...
2) FUNCTIONS OF SKIN
skin is the largest organ in our body, it is made up of two layers epidermis and dermis.
a)PROTECTION: it protect body from invasion by microbes, chemicals, physical agents.
b)SENSORY FUNCTION: free nerve ending on the skin give sensation of pain, touch, temperature which result in either voluntary or reflex activities( withdrawal of hand when touching a hot object)
c) EXCRETION: it excrete sodium chloride, urea through sweat.
d) REGULATION OF BODY TEMPERATURE: at about 36.9 celsius( By the process of sweating during heat and triggering shivering during cold).
