  • Example : Usage of specific Immunization such as BCG , DPT , MMR vaccines.

Secondary prevention :

  • It is defined as " An action which halts the progress of a disease at its incipient stage and prevents complications".
  • The main objectives are : To prevent the complications and sequences of disease., To prevent the spread of disease by curing all the known cases.
  • The specific interventions are early diagnosis and referral .
  • Early diagnosis helps better prognosis.
  • Example: Treat a disease before irreversible pathological changes occur.

Tertiary prevention :

  • When the disease process has advanced beyond it's early stages, tertiary prevention is used.
  • Main aim is to intervene disability limitation and rehabilation in the stage of tertiary prevention.
