Primary prevention:
- Actions are taken before the onset of the diseases.
- Main aim of this concept is positive health and an acceptable
level of health.
- Primary prevention is achieved through health promotion and
specific protection.
- Example : Usage of specific Immunization such as BCG , DPT ,
MMR vaccines.
Secondary prevention :
- It is defined as " An action which halts the progress of a
disease at its incipient stage and prevents
complications".
- The main objectives are : To prevent the complications and
sequences of disease., To prevent the spread of disease by curing
all the known cases.
- The specific interventions are early diagnosis and referral
.
- Early diagnosis helps better prognosis.
- Example: Treat a disease before irreversible pathological
changes occur.
Tertiary prevention :
- When the disease process has advanced beyond it's early stages,
tertiary prevention is used.
- Main aim is to intervene disability limitation and rehabilation
in the stage of tertiary prevention.
- Example : medical and psychological rehabilation.
