FEDERALISM : This word Federalism is derived from the Latin term "FOEDUS" which means Formal agreement or convenent. US Government is based on Federalism , it is a method of government or type of government where any single entity is not covering all the powers and authorities ,powers are divided between authorities at different levels , and which is controlled by government and its subdivisions . Powers are divided between National government and other government units.

IN US , There are 3 levels of law enforcement :

●FEDERAL

● STATE

● LOCAL

Now we will understand that what are thses levels of law enforcement and what is the purpose behind constituting these authorities.

FEDERAL : This is the first level or we can say upper level of law enforcement in United States , it can only investigate and enforce laws at federal level only and also it does help of state and local law enforcement. FBI is a federal agency.

Purpose: its purpose is as defined in official purpose is to protect and defend US against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats , to uphold and enforce criminal laws of US.

STATE : State law enforcement is also known as state police , state patrol or highway patrol .purpose of this is to Investigate crime at state level and which would be done by investigators and officer incharge of crime detection and prevention at state level. and to assist local police with investigation and emergencies.

LOCAL : Local law enforcement agencies includes city and county agencies, municipal , tribal and regional police.

Purpose : It to uphold the laws of the jurisdiction , provide patrol and investigation of local crimes.
