in terms of research is Mill's Method a good method to use or not? What are the limitations?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Mills method is good to use in research ..But it have many limitations also. In mills method , there are 5 methods used to recognize cause-effect chains.:

  • The method of agreement.
  • The method of difference.
  • Joint method of the above two.
  • Method of concomitant variables.
  • Method of residues.

According to mills method , if in all cases where an effect occurs, and C is common to all cases, then C is considered as the cause of the effect. That means it only give information about the probable causes. It does not reveals the correct explanatory causes. Also we need to know the reason for why the causation occurs. If we need to know the unknown cause of event, and if we use mills method , then it would fail. In this method one factor is the unique cause of the effect. In sometimes the cause may be complicated combinations of various factors . Also , the rules in their methods presupposes that we have a list of causes to consider.
